Melissa Public Library’s posted schedule, labeled starting October 1, 2026, separates a lost item’s replacement cost from a processing fee charged per item. For an ordinary book, the listed processing amount is $10 in addition to the item’s replacement cost. It is not a flat $10 replacement price.
That distinction matters before you pay a balance or buy a replacement yourself. Start with the library’s itemized account amount, not a remembered book price or another library system’s rules.
Separate the two parts of a lost-item bill
The library’s published fee schedule says replacement prices vary by item and that replacement costs and processing fees apply separately to each lost item. These are charges for the lost-material process, not an admission fee for attending a library program.
Ask staff which item category applies and how the replacement amount was determined. The page does not publish the purchase price of every individual book, kit or device, so this guide cannot supply an all-in quote for your account.
Check the processing category
The library lists these US-dollar processing charges per item, before the separate replacement amount:
Item category | Processing charge per item |
|---|---|
Books; graphic novels or manga | $10 |
DVDs | $5 |
Games; genealogy references | $15 |
Library of Things | $20 |
Adult hobby kits | $25 |
Children’s Bookworm Backpacks | $50 |
Laptops | $0 |
A $0 laptop processing charge does not establish a free laptop replacement. The same schedule says replacement costs vary by item.
A two-book example is only part of the bill
Our calculation for two ordinary lost books is 2 × $10 = $20 in processing charges. Each book’s replacement amount is additional. A card-payment charge can also affect the final amount.
Keep the processing subtotal, replacement subtotal and payment-method charge on separate lines. That makes it easier to ask about a discrepancy without confusing a service fee with the price of the missing material.
Check the payment-method charge
The same library page says it accepts cash and credit/debit cards, does not accept checks and does not support tap-to-pay. Its posted card convenience rate is 3%, with a $1 minimum for transactions under $33.
Confirm the final payable balance with staff before paying. The page does not establish a waiver, a refund entitlement if a lost item is later found, or approval to substitute a personally purchased copy. Ask about those circumstances before spending money on a replacement.
Reach the library with the item details
Melissa Public Library lists 972-837-4540 and 3411 Barker Avenue for assistance. Have the item title or account notice available when speaking with staff; this article does not collect card numbers or personal account records.
For activities rather than lost-material charges, see our Melissa kids’ guide. The published fee schedule and payment terms were checked October 19, 2026. This explains the existing October schedule and does not claim that a further fee increase was approved this week.
